Mouths dropped. People were astonished after this sermon.  Here is a snippet of that sermon: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matt.5:2ff). When Jesus was finished preaching the “crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes” (Matt.7:28-29).

Look closely here with me for a second. What does it mean to be blessed? Poor in spirit? What about mourning? How are those who mourn considered to be blessed?

Pastor Josh and others will be taking us through the beatitudes this summer. As the text is exposited the teachings of Jesus will shine brightly. These teachings will pierce our hearts with conviction. Other times we will feel more refreshed than drinking a cold glass of water when we are really thirsty. Sitting under God’s word, we can be assured that his word never returns void.

To get the most out of this series here are some suggestions:

  • Read the sermon text beforehand
  • Consider discussing this text in family worship or with another person
  • Pray for understanding and a worshipful response
  • Think about specific ways we can respond to God’s word

May we be nourished by God’s good word during the summer and seek to share this good word to everyone and everywhere to the glory of God.
