An Appetite for Advent

Preacher: Andy McClurg Series: Isaiah: Looking at Jesus - King, Servant, Conqueror Scripture: Isaiah 58:1–14

As we navigate the Christmas season, it's easy to get caught up in the idealized images of joy and togetherness portrayed in movies. However, for many, this time of year can be challenging, filled with sadness or a sense of emptiness. This week's sermon delved into Isaiah 58, exploring why our worship might feel empty and how aligning our hearts with God can transform our lives and bring true joy.

The Struggle with Empty Religion
Many people find themselves going through the motions of worship without feeling any real connection to God. This can lead to a sense of uselessness and frustration. Isaiah 58 addresses this issue head-on, showing that the people of Israel were experiencing similar feelings. They were fasting and praying, yet God was not responding. The reason? Their lives were not in tune with their worship.

God Exposes Empty Religion
In Isaiah 58:1-5, God calls out the people for their empty religious practices. They were fasting and seeking God daily, but their actions were not aligned with their words. They were oppressing their workers and engaging in quarrels, showing that their hearts were far from God. This disconnect made their worship meaningless.

What Does True Worship Look Like?

God Reveals True Religion
Isaiah 58:6-12 outlines what true worship looks like. It involves loosing the bonds of wickedness, undoing the straps of the yoke, and letting the oppressed go free. True worship is about showing mercy, sharing bread with the hungry, and providing shelter for the homeless. When our actions reflect God's love and mercy, our worship becomes meaningful.

The Rewards of True Worship
When we align our hearts and actions with God's will, He promises to bless us abundantly. Isaiah 58:8-12 describes the rewards of true worship: light breaking forth like the dawn, healing, righteousness, and guidance from the Lord. These blessings are not just for us but also enable us to rebuild and restore the lives of those around us.

How Can We Apply This to Our Lives?

To experience the joy of true worship, we must examine our hearts and actions. Are we living in a way that reflects God's love and mercy? Are we helping those in need and lifting the burdens of others? This week, challenge yourself to:

  1. Identify areas in your life where you might be oppressing others, even unintentionally.
  2. Look for opportunities to show mercy and help those in need.
  3. Pray for God to reveal ways you can align your heart and actions with His will.

Questions for Reflection

1. Do I come to church with a genuine desire to worship God and serve others?
2. Are there areas in my life where I am seeking my own pleasure rather than God's will?
3. How can I show mercy and help those in need this week?
