The Beauty of The Ordinances

Preacher: Malachi Tresler Series: Churchology Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:16–17

In a world searching for meaning and identity, the Christian church offers a powerful alternative: a life rooted in Christ through the transformative power of the ordinances.

The modern world often pushes the narrative of individualistic spirituality, encouraging us to look inward for meaning and purpose. However, this inward focus can leave us feeling empty and adrift. In this sermon, we explore the profound significance of baptism and communion, two Christian ordinances that offer a life of true nourishment and purpose.

1. The Power of Participation

Communion: Sharing in Christ's Sacrifice

The Lord's Supper is not merely a symbolic act; it's a profound participation in the very life and death of Christ.
Through communion, we share in the benefits of His sacrifice, experiencing a very real spiritual communion with Him.
This intimate sharing with Christ has profound implications for our lives, shaping our values and guiding our choices.

2. Marked as One Body

Baptism and Communion: Signs of Belonging

Baptism signifies our initiation into Christ's body, marking us as His own.
Communion, in turn, signifies our ongoing membership in that body, reminding us that we are united with Christ and with one another.
Just as the Israelites were marked by the blood of the Passover lamb, we are marked by our participation in these sacred ordinances.

3. The Church: A Gift of Order and Identity

Finding Meaning and Order in the Church

The church, with its clear boundaries and defined practices, provides a haven of order and stability in a chaotic world.
The ordinances of baptism and communion, observed within the context of the church, provide a framework for understanding our identity and purpose in Christ.
They offer a tangible expression of our faith, grounding us in a reality that transcends individualistic pursuits.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How have the ordinances of baptism and communion shaped your understanding of your identity as a Christian?
  2. How can you more deeply appreciate the gift of these ordinances in your own spiritual journey?

In a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain, the church offers a haven of order and meaning. Through the transformative power of baptism and communion, we are nourished by Christ, marked as His own, and called to live a life of exclusive allegiance to Him.
