Understanding the Church: Its Purpose, People, and Mission

The church plays a vital role in God's redemptive plan for humanity. From the creation of Adam and Eve to Christ's establishment of the church, God has been working to create a community of worshippers who reflect His glory and make disciples.

What is the Church?

The church is both an institution and an organism. As an institution, it has structure, organization, and formal elements like statements of faith, ordinances, and governance. As an organism, it has spiritual vitality through the unity and shared life of believers in Christ.

Think of it like a trellis (structure) supporting a vine (living community). Both elements work together - the structure provides support while the living community brings growth and fruit.

Who is the Church?

The church consists of three main groups working together:

1. Saints/Members

• Everyone spiritually united with Christ
• Committed to one another in covenant relationship
• Carry out most of the church's ministry
• Called to love, serve, and build up one another

2. Elders/Overseers

• Qualified men who provide spiritual leadership
• Teach Scripture and defend sound doctrine
• Work as a plurality to guide the church
• Partner with members and deacons in ministry

3. Deacons

• Qualified servants who demonstrate Christlike character
• Handle physical and logistical needs
• Support elders and members
• Help facilitate church ministry

What is the Church's Mission?

• Make disciples of all nations
• Teach obedience to Christ's commands
• Spread the gospel message
• Glorify God through worship and service
• Provide a glimpse of God's coming kingdom

Consider these questions this week:

1.  How actively am I participating in my church community beyond just attending services?
2. Am I using my gifts to serve others and build up the body of Christ?
3. Is there someone who looks more like Jesus because of my influence in their life?

Choose one practical way to engage more deeply in your church this week - whether through serving, discipleship relationships, or prayer for other members. Remember that being part of Christ's church is not just about receiving, but about contributing to His mission of making disciples and glorifying God.
