Craving God's Kingdom: Understanding the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21
The vision of the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21 provides a powerful glimpse into God's eternal kingdom and what awaits those who remain faithful to Christ. This passage reveals three key aspects of God's future kingdom that should shape how we live today.
What Does It Mean to Be God's People Forever?
The first aspect reveals that those who conquer will be God's people forever. This new creation removes all chaos and evil, symbolized by the absence of the sea. It represents the ultimate covenant union between God and His people, described as a marriage relationship that surpasses any earthly wedding.
In this eternal union, God promises to wipe away every tear and eliminate death, mourning, crying, and pain. This intimate picture shows God's tender care for His people, demonstrating that every tear shed in faith matters to Him.
What Will God's Place Look Like?
The New Jerusalem is described as both a bride and a city, highlighting its dual nature as both God's people and their dwelling place. Its massive dimensions and perfect cubic shape echo the Holy of Holies, suggesting all believers will have direct access to God's presence.
The city's architecture tells the story of God's redemption, with gates bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel and foundations inscribed with the twelve apostles' names. This demonstrates the unity of God's plan throughout history.
How Will Living Under God's Rule Be Different?
Unlike earthly kingdoms, God's rule will be perfect and complete. There will be no temple because God's holy presence will fill everything. His glory will provide all light, eliminating the need for sun or moon. Nothing unclean will enter this city - only those written in the Lamb's book of life.
Application
This vision of the New Jerusalem challenges us to examine our priorities and loyalties. Ask yourself:
- Am I living as someone who truly believes in this coming kingdom?
- What aspects of "Babylon" (worldly values and pursuits) am I still clinging to?
- How can I better align my daily choices with the reality of God's coming kingdom?
This week, identify one area where you've been compromising with worldly values. Make a specific plan to redirect your focus toward God's kingdom instead. Remember: those who conquer will inherit this glorious future, while those who compromise with the world will forfeit it.
The choice is clear - we must decide whether to invest in temporary earthly kingdoms or set our hearts on the eternal city God has prepared for His people.
