The Glory of Redemptive Grace
Preacher: Malachi Tresler Series: On Earth As It Is In Heaven Scripture: Revelation 22:1–5
Finding Hope in God's Promise of a Better World
Living in a broken world filled with suffering, loss, and pain often leads us to question if things will ever truly get better. The longing for something more - something that can satisfy our deepest yearnings - seems universal to the human experience.
Why Do We Feel Such Deep Longing?
We all experience a strange nostalgia that nothing in this world can fully satisfy. Whether it's the burden of aging, broken relationships, or the unnatural feeling of death, there's an undeniable sense that things aren't as they should be. Even those who have rejected God still feel this inexplicable grief and yearning for something more.
Our Failed Attempts at Creating Heaven
Humans often try to take matters into their own hands, attempting to create heaven without God. Like Dr. Frankenstein in Mary Shelley's novel, we use science, technology, and progress to try constructing our own paradise. But these attempts only multiply pain because we want:
- Resurrection without the Redeemer
- Healing without holiness
- A heavenly kingdom without the King of Heaven
What Does True Heaven Look Like?
According to Revelation 22:1-5, the true heaven God promises includes:
- A river of life flowing from God's throne
- The tree of life bearing fruit and healing
- No more curse
- God's presence at the center
- The ability to see God's face
- Eternal light from God himself
Why Is Seeing God's Face So Significant?
Throughout Scripture, seeing God's face represents the ultimate fulfillment of human longing. While Moses could only glimpse God's glory partially, in heaven believers will see God face-to-face. This "beatific vision" is not just a reward of heaven - it is the reward of heaven.
How Does This Future Hope Impact Us Now?
Understanding this future reality helps us recognize that our earthly longings point to eternal fulfillment:
- Unrequited love will be satisfied in perfect love
- The hunger for praise will be fulfilled in God's approval
- Fading beauty will be replaced by eternal glory
- Meaningless work will become purposeful reign with Christ
- Fear and insecurity will dissolve in complete security in God
Application
Consider these questions this week:
- What specific longings do you experience that remain unfulfilled in this world?
- How might those longings point to what God has prepared in eternity?
- Are you pursuing holiness and enduring suffering with eternal perspective?
The challenge this week is to identify one area where you're trying to create "heaven without God" and instead surrender it to Him, trusting His promise of future fulfillment. Remember - the gospel wasn't meant to just save you from something, but to bring you to Someone.
