The Verdict Is In: God Loves You and Nothing Can Change That

It is easy to question God's love when life gets hard. A bad diagnosis, a lost job, a broken relationship, and suddenly that quiet voice creeps in: Does God really love me? This is not a new struggle. Believers throughout history have wrestled with the same doubt. But the Bible gives a clear and settled answer.

Why Do We Question God's Love When Life Gets Hard?

The people of Israel did it. In the book of Malachi, God declares, "I have loved you," and His people respond, "How have you loved us?" They could not see it through the fog of their circumstances.

The early Christians in Rome faced real pressure. Being a follower of Jesus meant losing business, being rejected by family, and living under the threat of persecution. It was easy to wonder if God had forgotten them.

The same temptation hits us today. When gas prices rise, when a loved one dies, when a child walks away from the faith, we can start plucking petals off a flower. God loves me. God loves me not.

Paul wrote Romans 8:31-39 to put that game to rest once and for all.

What Does "God Is For Us" Actually Mean?

Paul opens his closing argument in Romans 8 with a question: "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

The word translated "if" in the original Greek carries the meaning of "since" or "because." It is not expressing doubt. It is stating a settled fact. A better reading would be: Since God is for us, who can be against us?

Four simple words. God is for you. That truth is the foundation of everything Paul argues in this passage.

What Can You Possibly Lack If God Is For You?

Paul answers this with one of the most powerful statements in all of Scripture:

"He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?" - Romans 8:32

God did not spare His own Son. Jesus, the one in whom the fullness of God dwells, the one the Father called "my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased," was given up to the cross. Not passively. Not reluctantly. Actively and purposefully, in love, for you.

Satan has always tried to convince us that God is holding back good things. It started in the Garden of Eden. Did God really say? He just doesn't want you to have what's best. That lie still circulates today.

But here is the truth: if God gave up His own Son for you, He will not withhold anything you need. Not money, not health, not worldly success necessarily, but everything required to bring you safely home to glory. Your trials are included in that. They are not signs of His absence. They are tools in His hands.

Do not judge God's love by your circumstances. Jesus had the worst circumstances imaginable on the cross. That did not mean the Father had stopped loving Him. It meant the Father was working through Him for your eternal good.

Who Can Bring Charges Against You If God Has Justified You?

Paul asks: "Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies." - Romans 8:33

Satan is called the accuser of the brethren. He is skilled at pressing on our guilt. And often the loudest accusations do not come from outside. They come from within. How can God love you after what you did last week? Real Christians don't act like that.

But when you trusted Jesus, His death covered your sins completely. God officially declared you not guilty. Because He is for you, no charge can stick.

As the beloved hymn puts it: My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.

In Christ, you are, as one might say, non-stick. The accusations are hurled, but they do not hold. You are not guilty.

Who Can Condemn You If Jesus Is Praying for You?

Paul continues: "Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died, more than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who is indeed interceding for us." - Romans 8:34

The only one authorized to condemn you on the last day is Jesus. And what is Jesus doing right now? He is praying for you.

Picture a courtroom. The judge steps down from the bench, walks over to where you are sitting as the defendant, and becomes your defense attorney. He pleads your case with nail-scarred hands. His argument is perfect. Father, I gave my life for this one. They cannot be condemned. They are free.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). The verdict is already in.

Can Anything Separate You From the Love of God?

Paul saves his most sweeping statement for last:

"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39

The enemy cannot actually separate you from God's love. So instead, he tries to make you feel separated. He uses tribulation, distress, persecution, financial pressure, grief, and loneliness to whisper that God has abandoned you.

Paul knew what it was like to feel like a sheep appointed for slaughter. He quotes Psalm 44:22 to show that this feeling is real. He does not minimize it. But he says that in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

Not conquerors despite the suffering. More than conquerors through it, because God is for us.

Application

This week, stop measuring God's love by your circumstances. The cross is the only measuring stick that matters. God settled the question of His love for you there, not in your bank account, your health report, or your family situation.

Here is a simple challenge: every morning when you wake up and every night before you sleep, say it out loud. God is for me. Let that truth push back against the accusations, the doubts, and the fears that come with a hard week.

Ask yourself these questions as you go:

• Am I letting my circumstances define what I believe about God's love, rather than letting the cross define it?
• When accusations come, am I reminding myself that God has declared me not guilty in Christ?
• Do I actually believe that nothing in all creation can separate me from God's love, or is that just a verse I know?
• What trial am I currently facing that I need to surrender to God, trusting that He is using it to bring me home to glory?

The verdict is in. God does love you. He gave up His Son for you. He has justified you. Jesus intercedes for you. And nothing in all creation will ever separate you from that love.
