You Are Almost Home: What It Means to Be a Hopeful Exile in a Broken World

Life in this world can feel deeply unsettling. Violence, bad news, broken relationships, and personal hardship leave us with a nagging sense that something is wrong. For Christians, that feeling is not a glitch. It is a signal. This world is not our home, and God is actively keeping us until we reach the one that is.

Why Does Life Feel So Unsettling?

There is a reason Christians feel out of place in this world. The Apostle Peter, writing to scattered believers throughout Asia Minor, calls them "elect exiles." These were people living as a minority in a Roman culture that pushed back against Christian values. They faced discrimination and persecution. Things were not the way they should be.

Peter's message to them, and to us, is not to be surprised by that. Instead, he calls believers to be hopeful exiles, people who acknowledge the brokenness around them while holding tightly to a promised future.

What Does It Mean to Be "Born Again"?

Peter opens his letter with a burst of praise rooted in something God has already done. In 1 Peter 1:3, he writes:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."

Being born again is not a physical event. It is a spiritual one. Jesus explained this to Nicodemus in John 3:5-6:

"Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, He cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of Spirit is Spirit."

Just as no one chooses the circumstances of their physical birth, no one can manufacture their own spiritual birth. God initiates it. He causes the soul to come alive.

Why Does This Matter for Your Assurance?

Peter does not say God caused you to be born again according to your faithfulness or your obedience. He says it was "according to his great mercy." Your standing before God does not begin with how well you performed this week. It begins with the mercy of God, and His mercy is greater than the depth of your sin.

New birth is the moment that turns not just your life but your eternity in a new direction. The old has passed away and the new has come. And because God is the one who started this work in you, He does not walk away and leave you to figure it out alone.

What Is the "Living Hope" Christians Have?

Peter says believers are born again to a living hope. This is not wishful thinking. It is a settled, absolute confidence in the promises of God for the future.

This hope is called "living" because it is directly connected to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. As 1 Corinthians 15 makes clear, if Christ is not risen, there is no hope. But because He is risen, everything changes.

Your circumstances change. Your emotions change. Your health will change. But your risen Lord does not change. Because He lives, you will also live. Because He lives, your hope is alive no matter what you are walking through right now.

What Is the Inheritance God Has Promised His Children?

In verse 4, Peter moves from living hope to inheritance. He describes it with three words: imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.

• Imperishable: It cannot decay or be worn out by time. Everything on earth eventually breaks down, but this inheritance is free from that.
• Undefiled: It is unstained by sin. In this world, sin touches everything. The inheritance God has prepared is completely free from it.
• Unfading: The things of this world lose their shine. Money comes and goes. Fame fades. Beauty fades. But this inheritance will forever keep its glow.

And here is the most important detail: it is not being kept by you. It is being kept by God, in heaven, for you.

What Does It Mean to Be an Heir of God?

An inheritance is not something you earn. It is something a Father gives to His child simply because that child belongs to Him. Romans 8:16-17 puts it plainly:

"The Spirit Himself bears witness with our Spirit, that we are children of God. And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ."

When God causes you to be born again, He does not just give you new life. He adopts you into His family. And as His child, you become an heir of everything He has promised.

John Bunyan, in his autobiography "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners," described a moment when this truth washed over him. He wrote: "I also saw, moreover, that it was not my good frame of heart that made my righteousness better, nor my bad frame that made my righteousness worse. For my righteousness was Jesus Christ Himself, the same yesterday and today and forever."

Your inheritance is secure not because of what you do, but because of who Jesus is.

What Happens When Christians Chase Earthly Things Instead?

One of the greatest dangers for an exile is forgetting that they are in exile. Slowly, the world starts to feel like home. We begin to chase what the world chases and measure success the way the world measures it.

Jesus addressed this directly in Matthew 6:20:

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal."

Do not cling to what is perishable when God has promised you what is imperishable. Do not build your life around a world you are leaving. Build your life around the inheritance you are receiving.

How Does God Keep Believers Until They Reach Heaven?

In verse 5, Peter adds something remarkable. God is not only keeping your inheritance in heaven. He is keeping you until you get there.

"Who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."

The word "guarded" carries the image of soldiers protecting a city. It is both an inward and outward guarding. God is actively protecting you from your own wandering and from outside attacks, day by day, right now.

Sin, Satan, and all of hell are no match for God's hold on you. Nothing will pull you out of His grip as you make your way home to Him.

What Role Do Trials Play in God's Keeping?

Peter explains in verses 6 and 7 that God guards believers through faith, and that faith is refined through trials. The testing of your faith, he says, is more precious than gold. Gold perishes. Your faith will not.

God is not being cruel when He allows difficulty. He is being a wise and gracious Father, refining your faith like gold through fire, preparing you for an eternity of inexpressible praise and glory and the joy of seeing Christ face to face.

What Is Heaven, Really?

Everything Peter points to, the living hope, the inheritance, the guarding, all of it leads to one destination: God Himself. Psalm 16:11 says that in His presence there is fullness of joy.

Heaven is heaven because God is there. He is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. He is the better home every exile is longing for, even if they do not yet know it.

Application

This week, hold the things of this world with an open hand. Identify one area of your life where you have been gripping something earthly too tightly, whether that is financial security, reputation, comfort, or control. Consciously release it and remind yourself that your true treasure is kept in heaven by God Himself, not by your performance.

Ask yourself these questions as you go through your week:

• Am I living like this world is my home, or like I am passing through it?
• When things go wrong, do I respond with despair, or with the confidence that God is guarding me?
• Where am I building my life around things that are perishable, defiled, or fading instead of the inheritance God has secured for me?
• Do I truly believe that God's hold on me is stronger than my tendency to wander?
